(Still there are no guarantees, there have certainly been people here complaining about some of the Nord velocity curves. Again, a dedicated board is more likely to feel right "out of the box" because the manufacturer designed everything as a unit to work together. That may (or may not) be satisfactorily fixable through more customization of the settings.

Maybe that will vary depending on exactly which sounds you're comparing.įeel is another whole problem, dealing with both the variables of the feel of the keys themselves, and also how the velocity curves mate with the software you're using. (Though there are other approaches, like the way Roland is specifically building Mainstage integration into the new Fantom, or how Native Instruments and Arturia integrate their own keyboards to work with their own software.)īut I'm surprised Mainstage sounded terrible.

I’ve even seen it work well on a Mac made in 2007.

Any Mac made within the last 3-4 years or so (at least) will work. I really can’t say why someone would prefer a Mac mini. I was doing some research and some recommended using a Mac Mini. Connect a MIDI cable from the keyboard, then to the MIDI interface, which then connects to the computer via USB.

Currently my rig is a Yamaha P90 88-key which goes through a midi to USB interfa.

Older keyboards will require a MIDI interface (I recommend this one). Im looking for a new controller keyboard for Mainstage, for live use. Newer keyboards can usually connect directly through a USB cable. If you want to play keyboard sounds through Mainstage, you just need Mainstage software from the App Store and a keyboard that can connect to a Mac.
